Chef’s Attire
It’s
more than likely that on a visit to a restaurant in
your time, you will have seen a chef wondering around
in his lovely attire. One of the main reasons’s for
this particular attire is to distinguish him from the
rest of the kitchen staff.
Shoes are one of the most important items to a chef.
It is of uppermost importance to a chef to have a nice
comfortable pair of shoes due to the amount of time
he will spend on his feet during the day. The chef’s
apron is another important piece of attire.
Contrary to many myths, the mean reason behind a chef
requiring an apron is to simple catch all of the spills
and stains that may happen during the day. More often
than not the apron will be white in colour. The apron
has ties which will go around the waist fully and then
tie at the front which then makes an ideal place to
hang a cloth.
Another piece of important attire is the chef’s hat
and it is generally made to fit the individual’s head.
They are generally white in colour but this may change
depending on the particular colour scheme of the establishment.
The band around the chef’s head is to help stop the
hat falling into his eyes and the balloon shape on top
of the hat is to ensure no hair gets into the food during
cooking.
Next in consideration is a pair of chef pants. They
must be highly comfortable and made of a material which
will keep the body as cool as possible. It’s also worth
considering that a chef is required to do a lot of bending
so they should not be too tight, but also not too baggy
either.
To finish off the outfit a chef will have a chef’s jacket
which, again, is generally white in colour. They can
have either long or short sleeves; the long sleeve’s
being slightly more protective. Overall the most important
thing to consider when wearing a chef’s uniform is comfort.
