Chef's Knives

It doesn’t matter whether you are a professional chef, or a domestic chef, what does matter is the quality of the utensils that you are using. Although there may be some slight difference in the way that food is cooked and the type of utensil used in a professional kitchen, the types of implements are all the same. These implements are called knives.

There are all types of knives used when cooking. The most important thing about using a knife is that it’s sharp enough for the job you are using it for. Comfort is another factor which is of importance, to avoid any unwanted strains etc..

As already stated, many different knives are available, so its therefore important to pick the right one for the job. The most commonly used is the Chef’s knife and its important that a cutting board is used so that the knife does not become blunt too quickly. The cutting board should be made out of polyprolene or polythene. You should use the rocking motion when cutting with this knife for the best results.

Another commonly used knife is the paring knife which is often used for trimming food or preparing garnish. It can also be used for the pealing of vegetables.

When cutting meat, either for later use, or for separating from the bone, a boning knife is used. Should you require the meat or fish in slice’s then the use of a slicer, or carving knife, would be advised.
Finally, the use of an all purpose knife is common within the kitchen. This type is better known as a utility or sandwich knife. This particular knife can be used for tasks previously mentioned such as slicing foods or chopping, hence the name ‘utility’.

It is therefore fair to say that kitchen knive have many different purposes and styles. What is important to remember is that you use the correct one for each individual job.
