Working As A Chef

It’d be difficult to find someone in the world that doesn’t enjoy food. The quality of food can, however, change dramatically, dependant on whether you eat in a high class restaurant, or alternatively, from home. Its therefore obvious that the difference in quality is down to the quality of the person cooking the food. Its fair to say that the person cooking at home will be the homeowner, whereas when eating out, it will be a trained chef. There are certain necessities in order for somebody to take the step up from ‘homeowner’ to qualified chef.

Primarily, its an absolute must that they are prepared to work long hours, night or day, and also be prepared to spend long periods of time stood up. If you’re already thinking that you’re not prepared to do that then it would be wise to consider a different career path!.

It would be strongly advised that you try and get some kind of hands on experience as you start out, even possibly just as a kitchen porter. Along with a good education in the culinary area this experience should put you in good stead. It would be a good idea to try and gain this experience as early on as feasibly possible, maybe doing so whilst studying.

As already stated, even if you’re working just as a porter you will have the opportunity to see all of the work that goes on behind the scenes when preparing meals for large amounts of people. Having gained this insight you will be able to decide whether becoming a chef is the right option for you, rather than wasting years training and then realizing.

With reference to a theoretical education in food it would be a good idea to look into food schools and see if there are any you could enroll with. It is there that you’ll be given all of the skills and knowledge that you’ll require. You will be shown that the importance of the way the food looks upon service is as important as the preparation and cooking. You should expect this basic training to have a duration of around four years.

Having gained some hands on experience, as well as some knowledge through your education, you should now be able to apply for a position within the hospitality trade. You can expect, once in this position, to be given such tasks as preparing both meat and vegetables correctly for cooking.

You may also expect to be given less interesting tasks, such as cleaning cooking utensils. This is all part of being a new chef and are important parts of your education.

You can only expect to become a 'real' chef having put in a number of years of training and education. A worthwhile piece of advice is that to become a top chef not only will you require a great deal of hard work and effort, but also a small amount of luck.
